Disks formatted as NTFS will be available for Macintosh computers in read only mode. NTFS has limited compatibility with Mac OS natively (requires 10.4 and newer, read only.) Full interoperability for both Windows and Mac systems have two strategies:


1. Format the disk HFS+ (Mac native)

 

HFS Plus or HFS+ is a file system developed by Apple Inc. to replace their Hierarchical File System (HFS) as the primary file system used in Macintosh computers. HFS Plus is an improved version of HFS, supporting much larger files (block addresses are 32-bit length instead of 16-bit) and using Unicode (instead of Mac OS Roman or any of several other character sets) for naming the items (files, folders.) 


HFS+ volumes can be accessed by Windows machines using third party software such as MacDrive from MediaFour, www.mediafour.com.   


2. Format the disk NTFS (Windows native)


NTFS is the best and most current file system for Windows hosts; NTFS has several improvements over FAT and HPFS (High Performance File System) such as improved support for metadata and the use of advanced data structures to improve performance, reliability, and disk space utilization, plus additional extensions such as security access control lists (ACL) and file system journaling.
