The following is a collection of Microsoft Backup faults and errors, along with potential solutions.

General Troubleshooting

1. Please run chkdsk /r on the volume, as well as the source volume to eliminate any file system problems as a cause.

2. Please check if the backup can complete on another disk, and make sure that there are no outstanding system updates.

3. There is a known issue with certain USB host controllers. Please see this kb article for more information and the hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976972

4. Please check the disk's SMART data. SMART can be accessed and used for active testing using a SMART diagnostic program. There are numerous SMART monitoring tools available- we recommend Smartmontools (All Platforms): http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ or HDDScan (Windows ) http://hddscan.com/
